In 2009, National Grid’s Professional Learning & Development department (L&D) launched Foundations of Leadership (FoL) to their largest audience of leaders - the nearly 3,000 first level leaders who are charged with driving change from the front line. FoL’s six-unit curriculum taught over 15 months.As with any large learning investment, National Grid wanted to know if FoL was working.• Was it impacting the business? What was the evidence?• Did results differ by country or line of business (LOB)?• Does support from the Line Managers play a role in FoL’s impact?• Where mid-course adjustments could be made to improve results of future students?To answer these questions, L&D implemented a measurement strategy that provides feedback regarding student reaction, applicability of content, learning transfer, and business impact.
