Giving Voice to Values

Presenter: Louis Carter, CEO, BPI
Jerry Goodstein, Professor Emeritus, Carson College of Business, Washington State University; Founder, Second Chance Employment Innovations

Description

In this episode, Mary Gentile and Jerry Goodstein team up to discuss Giving Voice to Values, an innovative approach to leadership development in business education and the workplace. GVV is the subject of their new book, Giving Voice to Values: An Innovation and Impact Agenda, and has transformed the development of values-centered leaders since Gentile first pioneered the practice. Together, Mary and Jerry describe the GVV approach, share examples of GVV’s impact in over 1300 organizations around the world, and highlight the relevance of GVV for responding to future leadership challenges and opportunities.
Giving Voice to Values is not about persuading people to be more ethical. Rather, GVV starts from the premise that most of us already want to act on our values, but we also want to feel that we have a reasonable chance of doing so effectively and successfully. The GVV approach emphasizes practical tools and communications skills, such as the use of scripts and active listening, that can raise the odds of individuals and organizations enacting their values and reinforcing strong ethical cultures. During our time together, we talk about how GVV is changing values-driven employee and leadership development in the education, business, not-for-profit, and government sectors.
