This article presents a description of the Appreciative Inquiry Summit as a major OD innovation. David Cooperrider and David Bright describe how the Appreciative Inquiry Summit brings representatives from major organizational stakeholders into the same space and time for powerful, shared, positive, forward-looking inquiry that discovers and lifts up the best of what currently exists or could exist within an organization. Appreciative Inquiry capitalizes on the power of words and images to shape creative conversations of the past, present and future. When an organization develops its appreciative capacity, it balances and transcends negative images through a focus on “what gives life to the system when it is most alive, effective, and synergistically connected in its ever expanding domain of relatedness (Whitney and Cooperrider, 2000).”
